At that time, sushi first appeared when fish were salted, wrapped in rice, and stored in wells for longer preservation. This process took around three months to a year for the fish. This type of fermented fish was first known as 'narezushi', the original dish that is actually considered the ancestor of sushi. Introduced to Japan in the 8th century, sushi later began to use vinegar, along with rice and fish, for faster fermentation. While this method increased the flavor of the product, it also shortened the time required for the fermentation process. However, especially due to the famine in Japanese lands during the Muramachi Period between 1337 and 1573, rice began to be consumed with fish for the first time, and sushi emerged.
Most Popular Types of Sushi
Maki sushi: It is a type of sushi prepared by dividing rice, fish and vegetables in rolls wrapped in seaweed into 6 or 4 parts. The seaweed used is called 'nori'.
Nigiri sushi: It is a type of sushi that is hand-pressed and shaped by hand. These types of sushi are not wrapped in anything.
Temaki Sushi: It is a type of sushi prepared by hand-wrapping, but it is wrapped in cones rather than rolls.
Sashimi Sushi: The name given to seafood and raw fish cut into slices and served. In other words, this type of sushi does not contain the rice used in making classic sushi.
